The article raises the problem of the contradiction between the increased role of natural science in the life of a modern person and society and the rather low natural science literacy of the population as a whole. According to the international research PISA (2000-2018), Russian schoolchildren take an average position in this area. To solve this problem, the authors propose to use a number of methods in teaching that stimulate the cognitive activity of students. One of such approaches is structuring the curriculum around the so-called «big ideas».
